YouTube Thumbnail Downloader
Download YouTube video thumbnails
The thumbnail images are fetched from YouTube by your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
About YouTube Thumbnail Downloader
Downloads the thumbnail image of a YouTube video in every size YouTube has, given the video's address. Works with watch, youtu.be, Shorts, embed, live and mobile links.
Paste the YouTube link (or just the 11-character video ID) and press Get Thumbnails. A large preview shows the biggest size that exists, sizes YouTube doesn't have for that video are left out, and a video ID that does not exist shows "Video not found or has no thumbnail". Press Download on one size, or Download all sizes (ZIP) for every size that exists in one file.
The largest size (1280×720) only exists for videos uploaded in HD, and the "Standard" size has black bars above and below on widescreen videos. For most uses the max resolution is the one to take; if it is unavailable, use High quality.

- Will I always get the highest resolution thumbnail?
- Not always — YouTube generates thumbnails at several resolutions, and the highest-resolution version isn't available for every video. Check what's actually offered before assuming you'll get the largest size.
- How does the tool get the thumbnail?
- It finds the 11-character video ID in your link, then asks YouTube's image server at img.youtube.com for the standard cover files of that ID. Those are ordinary image requests made by your browser. The tool does not log in to anything or read the video itself.
- Why is a size missing from the list?
- YouTube does not create every size for every video. The 1280x720 version exists mainly for HD uploads. When a size is missing, YouTube returns a tiny grey placeholder or an error, which the tool detects. That size is then left out of the list (a line says which), out of the large preview and out of the ZIP, leaving the sizes that are real.
- Can I get every size in one file?
- Yes. Download all sizes (ZIP) bundles each size that exists for the video into one ZIP, built in your browser. It counts as one download. If your browser refuses to let the page read the images, no ZIP is made and the message says so; the Download button on each size still works.
- Can I use a thumbnail I download here however I like?
- Not necessarily. The cover belongs to the creator or channel that published the video, and this tool does not change that. Using your own covers is fine. For anyone else's, check permission or the rules that apply to your use, such as quotation in commentary.
- Why did my browser open a new tab instead of downloading?
- Browsers sometimes refuse to let a page read an image served from another site. When that happens the tool opens the picture in a new tab and tells you to right-click it and choose Save image, which gives the same file.
- Does it work with Shorts links and a bare video ID?
- Yes to both. Shorts, youtu.be, watch, embed and live links all work, and so does pasting only the 11 characters that follow v= in a watch link. Anything else, such as a channel page, shows a message asking for a video address.
How to use YouTube Thumbnail Downloader
Paste a YouTube address into the YouTube URL box, or just the 11-character video ID, and press Get Thumbnails. Watch links, youtu.be links, Shorts, embed and live links are all understood, as are the mobile and music versions of the site.
A large preview of the biggest size that exists appears first, with its real pixel size. Below it are tiles for each size: Max resolution 1280x720, Standard 640x480, High quality 480x360, Medium 320x180 and Small 120x90. A size YouTube does not hold for that video is left out, with a line saying which. Press Download on the tile you want, or Download all sizes (ZIP) to get every size that exists in one file. The file is saved as a JPG named with the video ID and the size, for example youtube-ID-hqdefault.jpg.
When to use it
It is handy for pulling the cover of your own video when the original design file is gone, for placing a video's picture in a slide or document you are writing about it, for checking how a cover looks at the smaller sizes YouTube shows in lists, or for keeping a record of the artwork used on an upload.
When not to use it
Do not use it to republish another creator's cover as your own artwork; those images belong to the video's owner, and permission or a clear quotation purpose is your responsibility. It only retrieves pictures YouTube already holds, so it cannot make a new cover. To build one from your own footage, use the video thumbnail generator.
Tips for best results
The 1280x720 size exists only for videos uploaded in HD, so a Max resolution size that is left out does not mean your link is wrong. Standard shows black bars above and below on widescreen videos, which is why Medium at 320x180 or Max can look cleaner in a layout. When Max is unavailable, High quality is the best fallback.
Limitations
You get only the default cover picture YouTube serves for the ID, never other frames or alternate test covers. The sizes offered depend on the video, and all downloads are JPG. The ZIP is built in your browser, and if the browser blocks reading the images it can't be made (the single downloads still work). Playlist, channel and search addresses carry no single video ID, so they are rejected with a message. The tool needs YouTube's image server to be reachable from your network.
Privacy
This tool does make a network request. Your browser asks YouTube's image server, img.youtube.com, for each picture using only the video ID, so YouTube can see those requests just as it would for any embedded image. The address you paste is parsed locally to find the ID. If the direct download is blocked, the image opens in a new tab instead.
