About Legal Production Desk
A workspace for preparing a set of documents to hand over. List the documents with their page counts, say which are produced, redacted or withheld, and the desk hands out running Bates number ranges and writes the production log and the withheld-document list. It points you to the tools that do each step: OCR, redact, merge, exhibit labels, Bates stamps, bookmarks. Nothing is uploaded; your lists stay in this tab and are cleared when you close it.
Set the Bates prefix and starting number, then drop your PDFs or add rows by hand. Choose what happens to each document. Work down the steps, using the same prefix and starting number in the Bates tool, then download the logs.
The ranges follow the order of the list, so put the documents in the order you will merge and stamp them. Withheld documents get no numbers. The desk prepares paperwork; it does not check what a court or agreement requires, so confirm that with the people who set the rules.
- Does it add the Bates numbers to my files?
- No. It plans the ranges and writes the log. Use Bates Numbering to stamp the files with the same prefix and starting number, document by document in the same order.
- Why do withheld documents get no numbers?
- They are not handed over, so they are listed on the withheld list with the reason instead. Set a document back to produce and the numbers below it shift.
- Are my files uploaded?
- No. Only the file name and page count are read, in your browser, and the list is cleared when you close the tab.
How to use Legal Production Desk
Set the Bates prefix, starting number and digits. Drop your PDFs to list them with their page counts, or add rows by hand. Put the rows in the order you will stamp them and choose what happens to each: produce in full, produce with redactions, or withhold. Give a reason for withheld documents and describe the redactions.
Work down the steps, using the desk's prefix and starting number in the Bates tool so the stamps match the log, then download the production log and the withheld list as CSV or Excel.
When to use it
Use it when you are assembling a set of documents to hand over, such as a response to a document request, a disclosure, or a due diligence data room, and you need running numbers and a log that matches what you stamped.
When not to use it
It does not stamp, redact or merge anything itself, and it does not check what a court, agreement or agency requires. Confirm those rules with the people who set them.
Tips for best results
Decide the order first, then number. If you add or remove a document later, the ranges below it shift, so stamp only after the list is final. Keep the withheld list with the production log.
Limitations
Page counts are read from the files you drop and can be edited; numbers follow the order of the list. Protected PDFs may not give a page count and need it typed. The lists are kept in this tab for the visit only.
Privacy
Only file names and page counts are read, in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and the lists are cleared when you close the tab. Use Back up to save them to your own device.
