About Mute Video
Removes the sound from a video and keeps the picture. When the video is a common MP4 or MOV with H.264 picture, the picture is copied as it is, so there is no loss of quality and it takes seconds. Everything runs in your browser; the video is not uploaded, but the first use downloads a processing engine (about 25 MB) from a public CDN.
Drop a video and click Remove sound. Download the silent copy when it is ready. Your original file is not changed.
Muting is a good first step before sharing a screen recording or a clip with background talk or music you cannot post. If the picture is in an unusual format it has to be re-encoded to MP4, and the page tells you when that happened. Some phone .mov files use a codec the browser engine cannot read; export them from the phone first.
- Does muting reduce video quality?
- Usually not. For common MP4 and MOV files with H.264 picture the video is copied as it is and only the audio is dropped. If the picture format cannot be copied, it is re-encoded and the page tells you.
- What happens if my video has no sound already?
- The tool tells you there is nothing to remove instead of producing a copy.
- Can I get the sound back later?
- No. The new file has no audio. Keep your original if you might need the sound.
- Is my video uploaded?
- No. It is processed in your browser. Only the video engine itself is downloaded once, about 25 MB, from a public CDN.
- Why did my phone video fail to process?
- Some .mov files from phones use a codec the browser engine cannot read. Exporting or sharing the video from the phone's own app usually produces a file that works.
How to use Mute Video
Drop a video and click Remove sound. The tool checks the video, removes the audio track and offers the result for preview and download. Common MP4 and MOV files with H.264 picture are copied without re-encoding, so it is quick and the picture is exactly as it was.
When to use it
Use it before sharing a screen recording, posting a clip whose background talk or music you do not want public, or putting a video on a page where autoplay with sound is not allowed. It is also useful when you will add your own soundtrack elsewhere.
When not to use it
If you want to keep the sound as a separate file, use Extract Audio. To change the volume rather than remove it, use an audio tool after extracting. A video that already has no sound track is reported instead of being copied.
Tips for best results
Check the preview before downloading to confirm it is silent. Keep the original: the silent copy has no way to bring the sound back. For several clips, mute each one and then join them with Merge Videos.
Limitations
For formats where the picture cannot be copied into the output, such as HEVC in an MP4, the picture is re-encoded to MP4 and the page says so. Very large files are limited by your device's memory, and the page warns before you start. Some phone .mov files use a codec the browser engine cannot read, in which case export from the phone first.
Privacy
The video is processed in your browser with a video engine and is not uploaded. The first use downloads that engine (about 25 MB) from a public CDN, after which the browser keeps it.
