About Markdown Editor
A Markdown editor with a formatting toolbar and a live preview. Write headings, lists, links, tables and code with buttons or by typing Markdown, see the result as you go, and download the document as Markdown or a ready-to-open HTML page.
Type in the writing box or open a .md file. Select text and press a toolbar button to format it, or press it again to remove the format. The preview updates as you type. Download the .md or the HTML page, or copy the HTML.
Leave a blank line between paragraphs, lists and headings. In the preview, scripts and unsafe links are removed, so what you see is safe to share as HTML.
- How do the toolbar buttons work?
- Select some text and press a button to format it, or press the button again to take the format off. With nothing selected, a button inserts a placeholder you can type over. Ctrl or Cmd with B, I and K gives bold, italic and link.
- What Markdown is supported?
- Headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, links, images, quotes, lists, task lists, tables and code, following CommonMark with GitHub-style tables and task lists.
- Is the HTML safe to publish?
- The preview and the exported HTML have scripts, event handlers and javascript: links removed. Still read your page before you publish it.
- Is my writing saved?
- No. Everything stays in your browser and is gone when you close the tab, so download the .md file before you leave.
- Can I open an existing file?
- Yes. Use Open .md file for Markdown or plain text files up to 2 MB.
How to use Markdown Editor
Type in the writing box or open a .md file. Select text and press a toolbar button to format it, and watch the preview. Download the .md file or an HTML page, or copy the HTML into your site or email tool.
When to use it
Use it to draft READMEs, notes, documentation, blog posts and simple web pages without installing an editor.
When not to use it
To convert existing HTML into Markdown, use the Markdown and HTML Converter. This tool does not sync files or keep version history.
Tips for best results
Download the .md file often, since closing the tab clears the editor. Use one top-level heading per document.
Limitations
Nothing is saved between visits. There is no spell-check beyond your browser's own, and very large documents may be slow to preview.
Privacy
Your text stays in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or kept.
