About Book Spine and Cover Size Calculator
Works out the spine width and the full wrap-cover size (back + spine + front + bleed) for a paperback from the trim size, page count and paper type, and draws the layout to scale.
Pick the platform, the trim size, enter the page count and choose the paper. The numbers and the diagram update as you type. Paper thickness and bleed are editable because platforms differ and change them.
Treat the result as an estimate and compare it with the cover template the platform generates for your exact book before you finish the artwork. If your final page count changes, the spine changes with it.
- How is spine width calculated?
- Spine width is the page count multiplied by the thickness of one page of the chosen paper, plus any allowance you enter. Paper thickness is given per page, and one sheet is two pages.
- How big is a full wrap cover?
- The width is the back cover trim width, the spine and the front cover trim width, plus the bleed on the left and right edges. The height is the trim height plus the bleed at the top and bottom. The tool shows the result in inches, millimeters and pixels.
- Are the paper thickness and bleed values exact?
- They are starting values, not guaranteed ones, and you can edit them. Platforms change paper specifications and differ by paper and ink type. Confirm the numbers against the cover template the platform generates for your book.
- Why does the tool warn about an odd page count?
- Printed books are built from sheets with a page on each side, so the count is normally even and printers round up. Using the final even count gives the correct spine width.
- Can I use this for hardcover books?
- No. The calculation is for paperback wrap covers. Hardcover covers add board, wrap and hinge allowances that differ by printer, so use the printer's own hardcover template.
How to use Book Spine and Cover Size Calculator
Choose the platform, pick a trim size or enter your own, type the final page count and choose the paper. The spine width, the full cover width and height with bleed and the pixel size appear straight away, with a layout drawn to scale. You can edit the paper thickness, bleed and any spine allowance, and copy the numbers or download the layout as an SVG.
When to use it
Use it when you plan a cover, brief a designer or check the size of a cover file against your page count. It is also useful for comparing how paper choice and page count change the spine before you commit to either.
When not to use it
Do not use it as the final authority for a print-ready cover. Generate the cover template on the platform for your exact book and use its dimensions for the file you upload. The tool does not check or build the cover artwork.
Tips for best results
Finish the interior first so the page count is final, since each extra sheet widens the spine. Keep text and logos inside the dashed inner margin and let the background run to the edge of the bleed. If a platform template gives a slightly different spine, type the difference into the spine allowance field to match it.
Limitations
The calculation is page count times paper thickness per page, plus any allowance you enter, and the cover is two trim widths plus the spine plus bleed on the outer edges. The thickness and bleed values are starting values that you can change, and platforms differ and update them. Odd page counts, very low page counts and unusual thickness values produce warnings.
Privacy
All numbers are calculated in your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded or stored, and the SVG download is created on your device.
