One file is one chapter. A Markdown file with several # headings becomes several chapters.
Large files (over 50 MB) may take longer or run out of browser memory

The preview appears here before anything is downloaded. At 150 pages the inside margin would be at least 0.75 in on this platform.
About Book Interior Maker
Turns manuscript chapters into a print-style interior PDF at the trim size you pick. It sets the text with the font, size, line spacing and margins you choose, adds page numbers, running heads, a title page and a copyright page, starts each chapter on a right-hand page, and widens the inside margin for the page count where the platform has such a rule. Everything happens in your browser.
Add chapters from .docx, .md or .txt files, or paste text. Fill in the title, pick a trim size and a platform, adjust the type and margins, then press Build interior. Flip through the preview, read the margin check, and download the PDF.
This makes a text interior only: no pictures or tables. The platform check covers trim size, page count and margins; it does not promise a platform will accept the file, so run the platform's own checker before you publish.
- Which file types can I add as chapters?
- Word (.docx), Markdown (.md) and plain text (.txt), or text you paste. Each file becomes one chapter, except a Markdown file with several lines starting with "# ", which is split into one chapter per heading. Headings, bold, italic, lists and block quotes are kept. Images and tables in a .docx are not.
- How does the gutter margin work?
- For Amazon KDP, and when no platform is specific, the inside margin is raised to the minimum for the final page count: 0.375 in up to 150 pages, 0.5 in up to 300, 0.625 in up to 500, 0.75 in up to 700 and 0.875 in beyond. The tool builds the book, checks the page count, widens the margin if needed and builds again. IngramSpark and Lulu use a flat 0.5 in, and Barnes & Noble Press uses 0.75 in inside.
- Will KDP or IngramSpark accept the PDF?
- The tool cannot promise that. It checks trim size, page count and margins against rules it holds, and it embeds Literata in the file. Platforms also check bleed, fonts, color and other details, so upload the file to the platform's own previewer before publishing.
- Does every chapter really start on a right-hand page?
- Yes, when that option is on. The first page is a right-hand page, and the tool inserts a blank left-hand page whenever the next chapter would otherwise start on the left. Blank pages carry no running head or page number. Turn the option off to save pages.
- Why are some characters shown as question marks?
- Times and Helvetica are standard PDF fonts that only draw Western European characters, so other characters are replaced with a question mark and the tool tells you how many. Literata, the default, covers Latin, Greek and Cyrillic, and the browser draws other scripts as small pictures in the file.
How to use Book Interior Maker
Add chapters from .docx, .md or .txt files, or paste text. Enter the title, author and copyright text, pick a platform and trim size, then set the font, size, line spacing, margins, page numbers and running heads. Press Build interior, flip through the preview, read the margin check and download the PDF.
When to use it
Use it when your manuscript is written and you need a text-only paperback interior: a novel, memoir, essay collection or any book made of chapters of prose. It sets each chapter on a right-hand page and widens the inside margin as the page count grows on platforms that require it.
When not to use it
Do not use it for books with photos, tables, footnotes, multi-column layouts or equations. It does not place images and it does not read them from .docx files. For a book that needs real page design, use a layout program.
Tips for best results
Literata is embedded in the file, which print platforms generally want; Times and Helvetica are not embedded. Set your margins slightly above the minimum and check the preview at the first and last chapter pages. Always run the PDF through the platform's own previewer before you publish.
Limitations
The interior is typeset by this tool itself, not by the Book Writing Toolbox merge engine, and it has no hyphenation, no widow control beyond two lines, and no table of contents. Bold and italic are kept; underline, colors, tables and images are not. The platform check covers trim size, page count and margins from rules built into the tool; it does not promise a platform will accept the file.
Privacy
Your chapters are read and typeset in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and the PDF is built on your device.
