About Reverse Video
Plays a video backwards, picture and sound. Good for short effects, loops and "rewind" clips. The result is an MP4. Everything runs in your browser; the first use downloads a processing engine (about 25 MB).
Drop a short video and click Reverse. Download the result when it is ready. If the clip is too long for the picture size, the page tells you the longest length it can handle and what to do.
Reversing needs every frame of the clip in your device's memory at once, so it suits short clips: about 16 seconds at 720p and 30 frames per second, and much less at 1080p. The 480p option shrinks the picture so a longer clip fits. Trim a longer video first with Trim & Cut.
- Why is there a length limit?
- To play a video backwards the tool must hold all its frames in memory at once. A short 720p clip fits; a long or high-resolution one does not, so the page tells you the limit instead of crashing.
- How long a clip can I reverse?
- About 16 seconds at 720p and 30 frames per second, less at higher resolutions or frame rates. The 480p option allows a longer clip.
- Is the sound reversed too?
- Yes. The audio plays backwards along with the picture. Mute the video first if you do not want that.
- Can I make a clip play forward and then backward?
- Reverse the clip, then use Merge Videos to join the original and the reversed copy.
- Is my video uploaded?
- No. It is processed in your browser. Only the video engine is downloaded once.
How to use Reverse Video
Drop a short video and click Reverse. If the clip is too long for its picture size the page says how many seconds it can handle and what to do. Tick the 480p box to shrink the picture so a longer clip fits. Preview the result and download the MP4.
When to use it
Use it for rewind effects, funny clips, looping animations, product reveals that look better played backwards, and to check how something looks in reverse.
When not to use it
It is meant for short clips. For a long recording trim it first with Trim & Cut. It does not make a boomerang loop that plays forward and back; to build that, join the original and the reversed copy with Merge Videos.
Tips for best results
If you get the length message, trimming to the part you want is usually better than shrinking the picture. Silence the video first with Mute Video if the backwards sound is unwanted, then reverse it. Preview before downloading.
Limitations
Reversing needs every frame in memory at once, so the limit depends on size and frame rate: about 16 seconds at 720p and 30 frames per second, and only about 3 seconds at 1080p and 60. The 480p option shrinks the picture to allow more. The sound is reversed too, so speech sounds backwards. The result is a re-encoded MP4.
Privacy
The video is processed in your browser and not uploaded. The first use downloads a video engine of about 25 MB from a public CDN, which the browser keeps afterwards.
