Text Cleaner
Remove extra spaces, blank lines, curly quotes, invisible characters and HTML from pasted text
About Text Cleaner
Cleans up pasted text: removes extra spaces and blank lines, straightens curly quotes, deletes invisible characters, strips HTML tags and bullets, and can join hard-wrapped lines back into paragraphs.
Paste your text, switch on the clean-ups you want, and the result appears beside it. Copy the result when it looks right. The original stays in the left box, so you can change the options and compare.
Text copied from PDFs often has a line break at the end of every visual line. Turn on "Join wrapped lines" to get proper paragraphs back; blank lines are kept as the paragraph breaks.
- What counts as an invisible character?
- Zero-width spaces, zero-width joiners, the word joiner, the byte-order mark, soft hyphens and left-to-right or right-to-left direction marks. They are not visible but can break searches, comparisons and file names. Normal spaces, tabs and line breaks are not touched by this option.
- Why does my text come out as one long paragraph after joining lines?
- Joining treats a blank line as the end of a paragraph and merges every other line break into a space. If your text has no blank lines between paragraphs, everything is one paragraph. Add a blank line between paragraphs first, or leave the join option off.
- Will it remove the formatting from text I paste?
- The box only holds plain text, so bold, colours and fonts are already gone when you paste. What the cleaner adds is tidying of the characters themselves: spaces, line breaks, quotes, dashes and hidden characters.
- Does it change my words?
- No. Only whitespace, quote and dash characters, invisible characters, bullets and HTML tags are changed. Your words, numbers and punctuation such as full stops and commas are left as they were.
- Is the text I paste sent anywhere?
- No. The cleaning happens in your browser and the text is not uploaded or saved.
How to use Text Cleaner
Paste text into the Original box. The ten switches decide what is cleaned and the Cleaned box updates as you change them, so you can try options and compare without pasting again. Copy the result with the button underneath. The line below the boxes shows how many characters were removed.
When to use it
Use it on text copied from PDFs, emails, web pages, chat apps or Word files before it goes into a CMS, spreadsheet, code editor or form. Typical jobs: removing double spaces and stray blank lines, turning curly quotes into straight ones, deleting zero-width characters that break searches, stripping HTML tags, and joining lines that a PDF wrapped at every line end.
When not to use it
Do not use it to repair damaged encodings (text full of odd symbols such as é needs the original file opened with the right encoding), and it does not correct spelling or grammar. For changing capitals use the Case Converter, and for finding and replacing specific words use Find & Replace.
Tips for best results
Start with the defaults, which trim lines, collapse spaces and blank lines, straighten quotes and remove invisible characters. For text from a PDF, add Join wrapped lines. If you need every blank line gone, switch on Remove all blank lines, which overrides the reduce-to-one option.
Limitations
Joining wrapped lines treats a blank line as a paragraph break, so text without blank lines becomes one long paragraph. Tag removal deletes anything inside angle brackets and decodes only the common entities (& < > " ' ), so it is not a full HTML parser. Bullet removal handles standard bullet characters, hyphens, asterisks and numbers followed by a dot or bracket.
Privacy
The text is cleaned in your browser tab using ordinary string functions. It is not uploaded, stored or logged, and it disappears when you close or reload the page.
