About Final Grade Calculator
Works out the score you need on your final exam to finish the course with the grade you want, from your current grade and how much the final counts for.
Enter your current grade as a percentage, the weight of the final exam (for example 30 for 30%), and the grade you are aiming for. The table shows the score needed for each common grade, and you can also test a score to see where you would finish.
Use the percentage your instructor gives you for the grade so far, not a letter. If the final is out of a different total, divide your points by that total first. Grade cut-offs differ between schools, so check your syllabus for the exact percentage an A or B needs.
- How is the score needed worked out?
- The final's weight is applied to the final score and the rest to your current grade. The tool solves that for the final score that gives your target grade.
- What if the answer is more than 100%?
- Then the grade cannot be reached with the final alone. Ask whether extra credit or a re-sit is available, or aim for the next grade down.
- What does Secured mean?
- Your current grade is high enough that you reach that grade even with 0 on the final.
- Can I use points instead of percentages?
- Convert points to a percentage first: divide by the total available and multiply by 100.
- Is anything saved or uploaded?
- No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you enter leaves your device.
How to use Final Grade Calculator
Enter your current grade as a percentage, the weight of the final exam and the grade you want. The result shows the score you need on the final. The table below it shows the score needed for an A, B, C and D, and a box lets you try a score and see where you would finish.
When to use it
Use it before a final exam to see how much you need to score, to decide how much to study for each course, or to check whether a grade is still within reach.
When not to use it
It does not turn percentages into letters or points for your school, and it does not average several courses. For that, use GPA Calculator. It assumes the final is the only part of the grade still to come.
Tips for best results
If the final is out of a different total, divide your points by that total and multiply by 100 first. Try a few scores in the box to see how much each extra mark changes your result.
Limitations
The answer is only as good as the numbers you enter: use the grade your instructor shows for the work so far and the exact weight in your syllabus. Grade cut-offs differ between schools, and some round up or drop a lowest score, which this does not model. If the score needed is above 100%, extra credit may still make it possible.
