About Split PowerPoint
Cuts a PowerPoint presentation (.pptx) into smaller presentations. Take a range of slides (for example 1-3 and 7), cut the deck into parts of every 5 slides, or save every slide as a file of its own. Each new file is a real presentation: it keeps the original's slide master, layouts, theme and slide size, and each slide keeps its speaker notes, pictures, charts and tables. What belonged only to slides you did not take, such as their notes, comments and pictures, is left out, so the new files are not padded with it.
The new files do not shrink in proportion: each one carries its own copy of the slide master and theme, and any picture used by more than one slide is stored in every file that uses it. A link on a slide that jumps to a slide you did not take is removed (the text stays). Section names are kept when you take a range, and a stored preview picture is dropped when the first slide is not slide 1. Old .ppt files: open them in PowerPoint and save as .pptx first.
- What can I split a presentation by?
- Three ways: a slide range such as 1-3 and 7 (all in one file, or each range as its own file), every N slides such as every 5, or one file per slide in a ZIP. In the first way you can also click slides in the picture grid instead of typing numbers, and the grid shows which file each slide goes into before you press the button.
- Do the new files keep the theme, notes and pictures?
- Yes. Each new file is a complete presentation with the original’s slide master, layouts, theme and slide size. Each slide keeps its speaker notes, pictures, charts and tables. What belonged only to slides you did not take, such as their notes pages, comments, charts and pictures nobody else uses, is left out.
- Why are the new files not much smaller than the original when I split it into parts?
- Every part carries its own copy of the slide master, layouts and theme, and a picture used on several slides is stored in each file that uses it. Splitting a deck into ten parts therefore gives ten files that together are somewhat larger than the original. If size matters, use Compress PowerPoint on the parts.
- What happens to links, sections and the preview picture?
- A link on a slide that jumped to a slide you did not take is removed and its text stays; links between slides you did take still work. Section names are kept when you take a range and nothing is reordered. A small preview picture stored in the file is dropped when the first slide of the new file is not slide 1, because it would show the wrong slide.
- Is my presentation uploaded anywhere?
- No. The file is opened and each new file is built in your browser tab, and the ZIP is made there too.
How to use Split PowerPoint
Drop a .pptx file. The slides appear as pictures with their numbers and titles. Choose how to split: a slide range (type 1-3, 7 or click slides in the grid; Shift-click picks a run), every N slides, or one file per slide. Before you press the button, the grid shows which file each slide goes into, and a list shows the files you will get. Press Split and watch the file counter; Stop ends it early. You then see the new files with their sizes, can preview any of them next to the original, and download one presentation, or a ZIP, or each file on its own.
When to use it
Useful when one long deck has to become several: a lecture split into sessions, a report with a section for each department, a sales deck cut down to the slides one customer should see, or a deck that is too big for an email split into two. It is also a way to take a single slide out as a presentation of its own.
When not to use it
If you want every slide as a picture, use PowerPoint to Images. If you want to reorder or delete slides in the same deck, use Organize Slides. If a file is too big to send, try Compress PowerPoint first, because splitting does not reduce the total size. Old .ppt files are not read; save them as .pptx first.
Tips for best results
Use the grid to check the slides before you split; hidden slides are marked and are taken like any other. If you need to send a part to someone outside your team, run Clean PowerPoint for Sharing on it afterwards to remove notes and author names. For one file per slide, the names carry the slide number, so they sort in order.
Limitations
Each new file carries its own copy of the slide master, layouts and theme, and a picture used by several slides is stored in every file that uses it, so the parts together are larger than the original. A link to a slide that is not in the new file is removed. Section names are kept only when you take a range without reordering, and the stored preview picture is dropped when the first slide changes. Splitting a very long deck into one file per slide makes many files and takes time.
Privacy
The file is opened and every new file is built inside your browser tab, so the presentation is not uploaded. A request that counts the use goes to this site when you download and carries no part of your file.
