About EXIF Remover
Shows what hidden information is stored inside your photos (GPS location, camera or phone model, date and time, editing software, comments) and removes it. JPEG, PNG and WebP pictures are cleaned without re-encoding, so the picture itself is not changed or recompressed.
Drop one or more pictures (up to 5 at a time on the trial). Each one is listed with what was found inside it. Click Remove hidden data and download the clean copy (several files come as one ZIP). The tool reads the cleaned files again to confirm nothing is left.
Social networks and messaging apps often strip location from pictures you post, but email, cloud links and file transfers usually do not. Clean a photo before sharing it if it was taken at home or work. HEIC or other formats: convert to JPEG first with Convert Formats.
- What is EXIF data?
- It is information a camera or phone stores inside a picture file: when and where it was taken, the device model, settings and sometimes the software used. Anyone who receives the file can read it.
- Does removing metadata reduce picture quality?
- No. JPEG, PNG and WebP files are cleaned by taking out the metadata sections without decoding or re-compressing the picture, so the image is unchanged.
- Why do you keep a rotation flag?
- Many phones save a portrait photo sideways plus a note saying how to turn it. Without the note it would show sideways. The tool keeps only that one number; untick the box to remove it too.
- Does it work with iPhone HEIC photos?
- Not directly. Convert them to JPEG with Convert Formats first, which also leaves the camera data behind, then run the EXIF Remover if you want to check the result.
- Is my photo uploaded to be cleaned?
- No. Everything happens in your browser and the files never leave your device.
How to use EXIF Remover
Drop one or more pictures. The page lists what each contains: GPS position, device, date and time, software and comments. Leave the rotation-flag box ticked so photos taken in portrait still show upright, then click Remove hidden data. A single picture downloads as a clean copy, several come as one ZIP, and the page lists what was removed from each.
When to use it
Use it before posting photos in an ad, forum or blog, emailing pictures, uploading them to a website or sending them to a stranger, especially when they were taken at home, at work or at a child's school. It also helps remove editing-software and camera details you would rather not share.
When not to use it
It does not blur faces, number plates or visible signs. For HEIC, TIFF and other formats first convert to JPEG with Convert Formats. It does not remove the colour profile or image resolution, because those are not private. Do not rely on it for evidence work where metadata must be kept.
Tips for best results
After cleaning, the tool reads each result again to confirm no location or camera data is left. Messaging apps often remove location on their own, but email, shared links and file transfers usually keep it, so clean the file before sending. Keep the originals if you need the data yourself.
Limitations
Only JPEG, PNG and WebP are supported, and each is cleaned without re-encoding, so quality and size are unchanged apart from the removed data. With the rotation box ticked, a tiny block that stores only the rotation is kept for pictures that are not upright. Hidden data stored in unusual places, such as inside a maker note of another format, is covered only to the extent the file keeps it in the standard sections that are removed. A batch takes up to 5 pictures at a time on the trial and more on a paid plan.
Privacy
Pictures are read and cleaned in your browser. They are not uploaded, and the clean copies exist only in memory until downloaded.
