About Etsy Title and Tag Checker
Checks an Etsy listing title and tags against the limits Etsy sets: a title of up to 140 characters, and up to 13 tags of up to 20 characters each. It also points out repeated tags, symbols tags usually reject, repeated or shouted words in the title, and title words your tags do not cover.
Paste your title, then paste your tags separated by commas or one per line. The counts and the checks update as you type. Red items break a limit and need fixing; amber items are suggestions. Copy the cleaned tag list when you are done.
Use tags for phrases the title does not already carry. The title and the tags are two chances to match what a buyer types, so repeating the same words in both uses up a chance. Etsy changes its rules, so confirm in the listing editor before publishing.
- What are the limits for an Etsy title and tags?
- A listing title can be up to 140 characters, and a listing can have up to 13 tags of up to 20 characters each. The checker shows how many characters and tags you are using and marks anything over the limit in red.
- Why does it say my tag has a symbol Etsy usually rejects?
- Etsy tags normally accept letters, numbers, spaces, hyphens and apostrophes, and the marks for trademark, copyright and registered. Tags with symbols such as & or % are often refused when you save the listing. Etsy can change this, so confirm in the listing editor.
- Does it tell me which tags or title words will rank?
- No. It has no search data. It checks the limits, repeats and gaps, and leaves the choice of words to you.
- How do I separate the tags?
- Use commas, semicolons or one tag per line. Extra spaces are removed, and a repeated tag is found even when the capital letters differ.
- Why does it list title words that none of my tags use?
- The title and the tags are two chances to match what a buyer types. If a word in the title is something buyers search for and no tag carries it, a tag could add another way to be found. It is a prompt to think about, not a rule.
- Is my listing text uploaded?
- No. The checks run in your browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server, and the text is cleared when you close the page.
How to use Etsy Title and Tag Checker
Paste the listing title into the first box and the tags into the second, separated by commas or one per line. The counts update as you type: characters out of 140 for the title, tags out of 13, and the length of each tag out of 20. Items in red break a limit. Items in amber are suggestions. When the tags are right, copy them back out as a clean list and paste them into the listing.
When to use it
Use it before you publish or renew a listing, when you rewrite titles for a whole shop, or when Etsy refuses a tag and you cannot see why. It is also a quick way to see whether your tags repeat the title, which wastes a chance to match another search.
When not to use it
Do not use it to learn what buyers search for or how a listing will rank. It has no search data and cannot tell you which words are popular. It also does not write titles or tags for you.
Tips for best results
Put the phrase that best describes the item in the first 40 characters of the title, since that is what shows first in many lists. Use all 13 tags and make each a different phrase of two or three words. If a title word appears in no tag, ask whether a buyer would search for it, and if so give it a tag.
Limitations
The firm checks are the 140-character title, the 13-tag limit and the 20-character tag limit. Everything else is a suggestion based on common seller practice, not a rule: repeated words, capitals, symbols and single-word tags. The list of symbols Etsy rejects in tags is a close guess and Etsy can change it, so confirm in the listing editor. Characters are counted as people see them, so an accented letter or an emoji counts as one.
Privacy
The checks run in your browser tab. Your title and tags are not uploaded or stored, and they are cleared when you close the tab.
