About Rotate Video
Turns a video 90 degrees clockwise or anticlockwise, turns it upside down, or mirrors it left-right or top-bottom. Fixes clips filmed the wrong way round. The video is re-encoded to MP4, so it takes longer than a simple copy. Everything runs in your browser; the first use downloads a processing engine (about 25 MB).
Drop a video, choose the turn or flip and click Apply. Download the new MP4 when it is ready. Your original file is not changed.
A 90 degree turn swaps width and height, so a landscape clip becomes portrait. Mirroring is a flip, not a turn: use it for selfie clips where text reads backwards. Sound is kept (AAC or MP3 as it is, other formats are converted to AAC).
- Does rotating lose quality?
- The video has to be re-encoded, so it is not bit-identical. The tool uses a high-quality setting, so the difference is hard to see for normal clips.
- What is the difference between rotate and mirror?
- Rotate turns the picture around, like turning a photo. Mirror swaps left and right as in a mirror, which is what you want when text on a selfie clip reads backwards.
- Why is the output an MP4?
- MP4 with H.264 plays on almost every device and browser. Whatever the input format, the rotated video is saved as MP4.
- Is the sound kept?
- Yes. AAC and MP3 audio is copied unchanged and other audio is converted to AAC. A silent video stays silent.
- Is my video uploaded?
- No. It is processed in your browser. Only the video engine is downloaded once.
How to use Rotate Video
Drop a video, choose Turn right 90°, Turn left 90°, Turn 180°, Mirror left-right or Flip top-bottom, and click Apply. Preview the result and download the MP4. Changing the choice clears the old result so you cannot download the wrong one by mistake.
When to use it
Use it for a clip filmed sideways or upside down, a phone video that plays the wrong way in some players, or a selfie clip where text reads backwards and needs mirroring.
When not to use it
It changes the whole video the same way and does not crop or resize, so a 90 degree turn simply swaps the width and height. It cannot turn only part of a clip, and it is not a stabiliser.
Tips for best results
Pick the turn that makes people stand upright, not the one that sounds right: a clip that plays sideways to the right needs a turn to the left. Mirroring does not turn the clip, it only swaps left and right. Check the preview before you download.
Limitations
Every rotation re-encodes the picture to MP4 (H.264), which takes time and slightly changes the data, though quality at the used setting is high. Audio in AAC or MP3 is copied; other audio is converted to AAC. Very large videos can run out of memory in the browser and the page warns beforehand.
Privacy
Processing happens in your browser. The video is not uploaded; the first use downloads a video engine of about 25 MB from a public CDN and the browser keeps it.
