How this was calculated
1. Taxable income
Income - state standard deduction - personal exemptions (never below 0)
Using Income = $75,000.00; Deduction and exemptions = $5,706.00
Result: $69,294.00
2. Tax by bracket
For each bracket: taxable income inside the bracket x its rate; add the brackets (less any credit)
Using Bracket 1 (1%) = $110.79; Bracket 2 (2%) = $303.70; Bracket 3 (4%) = $607.52; Bracket 4 (6%) = $965.40; Bracket 5 (8%) = $940.16
Result: $2,774.57
3. Total
State tax (local income tax not included)
Using State tax = $2,774.57
Result: $2,774.57
4. California State Disability Insurance (SDI)
Wages x 1.3%
Using Wages = $75,000.00; Rate = 1.3%
Result: $975.00
5. Total with local tax and payroll programs
State income tax + local income tax + payroll programs
Using State income tax = $2,774.57; Local income tax = $0.00; Payroll programs = $975.00
Result: $3,749.57

Estimated rates, mostly tax year 2026 (California uses the 2025 schedule; see the per-state note). Check your state's revenue department for exact figures. Uses each state's standard deduction and exemptions; credits and federal-tax deductions are not modelled. Local income taxes: the typical-average box appears only for Indiana, Maryland, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania and uses that average only. A City or county list gives a named local tax as its own line for New York City and Yonkers, every Maryland county and Baltimore City, Philadelphia, Detroit, Kansas City, St. Louis and Columbus; all other cities and counties (including Indiana counties and other Ohio and Pennsylvania cities) are not included, so add them yourself. Michigan cities other than Detroit have no average here and are never included. Payroll programs shown for California, New York, New Jersey, Washington, Massachusetts and Oregon are employee shares on wages and are listed apart from income tax; other states' programs are not included. California includes the 1% Mental Health Services Tax over $1,000,000 of taxable income (source: ftb.ca.gov). Not tax advice.

About State Tax Calculator
Estimates US state income tax for all 50 states and Washington DC using each state's bracket structure, standard deduction and exemptions, for single, married and head-of-household filers. A comparison view ranks every state for the same income.
Pick your state, filing status and income. You get the estimated tax, your effective and marginal rate, and a bracket-by-bracket breakdown. Where a state has local income taxes, tick the local-tax box for a typical average or pick your city or county for its own line; California, New York, New Jersey, Washington, Massachusetts and Oregon also show their payroll programs (SDI, paid leave) as separate lines. Use "Compare all states" to see where the same income is taxed least.
This is a planning estimate: credits, federal-tax deductions, phase-outs and local taxes beyond the typical average are not modelled. Check your state's revenue department before filing.
Watch: State Tax Calculator in Action
- Do all US states have income tax?
- No — state tax rates and structures vary widely, and some states have no income tax at all. Select your specific state to see how its rate structure applies to your income.
- Which states have no income tax?
- Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming do not tax wages. The state list marks each of them. Washington still has payroll programs such as Paid Family and Medical Leave, which are shown as separate lines.
- How is state income tax calculated?
- The tool subtracts the state's standard deduction and personal exemptions for your filing status, then applies each bracket's rate to the slice of income inside it. The brackets are added up and any state credit is taken off. The breakdown table shows every bracket.
- Do cities charge income tax too?
- Some do. Pick your state, then a city or county to add its own local income tax line: New York City and Yonkers, every Maryland county and Baltimore City, Philadelphia, Detroit, Kansas City, St. Louis and Columbus. Other cities and counties are not included, so add them yourself.
- Which state has the highest income tax?
- Use Compare all states: it ranks every state for your income and shows how much more or less you would pay than in your own state. The answer depends on your income, because some states tax at a flat rate and others use brackets.
- Are payroll programs like California SDI included?
- They are shown as their own lines, apart from state income tax: California SDI, New York Paid Family Leave, New Jersey TDI and FLI, Washington Paid Family and Medical Leave and WA Cares, Massachusetts PFML and Paid Leave Oregon. They are employee shares charged on wages, with their wage caps, and each line names its source.
- Does it use my exact tax return?
- No. It is a planning estimate from your income, filing status and the state's standard deduction and exemptions. Credits, federal-tax deductions, phase-outs and local taxes that are not listed are not modelled, so check your state's revenue department before filing.
