Word & Character Counter

How to use Word & Character Counter

Paste or type your text into the box, and the counts update live as you go — no button to click, no waiting. You'll see word count, character count, sentence count, paragraph count, and an estimated reading time, all recalculating on every keystroke. Sentence counting works by looking for sentence-ending punctuation (periods, question marks, exclamation points), and paragraph counting looks for genuine blank-line breaks between blocks of text, the same way most word processors treat a paragraph break.

There's no upload or file needed — this is a plain text box, so if your content is in a Word document, Google Doc, or PDF, copy the text out and paste it in directly. The reading-time estimate is calculated at 200 words per minute, a commonly used average adult silent-reading speed, so treat it as a reasonable ballpark rather than a precise prediction for any specific reader.

When to use it

The most common use is checking whether a piece of writing meets a required word count — an essay assignment, a cover letter with a stated limit, a guest post with an editor's target length. It's equally useful the opposite direction: checking a social media post or text field against a character limit before posting, since many platforms cap by character count specifically, not word count. Writers also use it simply to gauge how long a piece actually is — a blog post draft, a speech, a script — against how long they intend it to read or take to deliver.

When not to use it

If you need a deeper analysis of the writing itself — readability scoring, keyword density for SEO purposes, or grammar and spelling checking — this tool only counts, it doesn't evaluate quality or correctness; a dedicated grammar checker or SEO content tool covers those separately. For counting words inside a file format directly (a Word document's own built-in word count, for instance) without copying text out first, your word processor's own built-in count is more direct than pasting the content elsewhere.

Tips for best results

For a strict platform character limit (a tweet-style post, a form field with a stated max), watch the character count specifically rather than the word count — a short sentence made of long words can hit a character limit while still being well under any reasonable word-count concern. If you're checking a piece against a target reading time for a spoken presentation rather than silent reading, note that spoken delivery is usually slower than the 200 words/minute silent-reading estimate this tool uses — roughly 130-150 words per minute is a more realistic spoken-pace baseline to mentally adjust toward.

Limitations

Sentence counting is punctuation-based, so unusual formatting (a list of short phrases with no ending punctuation, or heavy use of abbreviations with periods like "U.S." or "Dr.") can occasionally throw off the sentence count in either direction, since the tool can't distinguish a true sentence-ending period from one that's part of an abbreviation. Reading time is a single fixed-rate estimate (200 words/minute) rather than adjusted for text complexity — a dense technical document will genuinely take longer to read than the estimate suggests, and a simple, casual piece may read faster.

Privacy

All counting happens directly in your browser as you type — the text you paste or type is never sent anywhere, there's no server call involved in producing any of the counts. Closing or refreshing the page clears whatever you'd typed, since nothing is saved automatically.
