About Excel / CSV Converter
Converts between CSV/TSV and Excel (.xlsx), in both directions, entirely in your browser: Excel to CSV, and CSV (comma, semicolon, tab or pipe separated) to a real Excel file.
Drop a CSV, TSV, or Excel file. For a workbook with several sheets, pick the sheet to convert. Then download as CSV (formula-looking cells are escaped by default; optionally with a BOM so Excel shows accented letters correctly) or as an Excel file. The delimiter and text encoding of CSV files are detected automatically and shown, so you can check them.
CSV is one flat table with no formatting or formulas, so converting Excel to CSV drops those. Plain numbers in a CSV become real numbers in the Excel file; values like 00123 or very long digit strings stay as text so nothing is changed or rounded.

- Will my Excel formatting and formulas survive the conversion to CSV?
- No — CSV files don't preserve formatting, formulas, or multiple sheets, since CSV is deliberately a plain, structure-only format. If your Excel file has more than one sheet, only the first sheet is converted.
- Which file types can I open?
- CSV, TSV and text files, plus Excel and OpenDocument spreadsheets: .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm and .ods. Any file that cannot be read produces an error message and returns you to the drop box.
- How does it know the delimiter and encoding?
- For text files, it tests comma, semicolon, tab and pipe on the first lines and picks the one giving the most consistent column count. A .tsv name forces tabs. Encoding is detected as UTF-8, UTF-16 or Windows-1252, and both are shown on screen.
- What does the BOM option do?
- It writes an invisible marker at the start of the CSV that tells Excel the file is UTF-8. Without it, Excel on Windows may misread accented letters. It is on by default and can be switched off for tools that dislike it.
- Will numbers stay as numbers in the Excel file?
- Plain numbers become real numeric cells so you can sum them. Values with leading zeros, long digit strings of more than 15 characters, and anything non-numeric stay as text, so codes and IDs are preserved exactly.
- What happens with a workbook that has several sheets?
- A Sheet menu lists the visible ones, and you convert one at a time. The CSV file name then includes the sheet name when the workbook has more than one. Switching sheets reloads the preview.
How to use Excel / CSV Converter
Drop a file onto the box or click to choose one. It accepts .csv, .tsv, .txt, .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm and .ods. Once loaded, the page shows the file name, the row and column counts and a preview of the first 20 rows. For a text file it also reports the detected delimiter and encoding, such as semicolon-separated, Windows-1252.
If an Excel workbook has several visible sheets, choose one from the Sheet menu. Tick or untick the box about adding a BOM, then press Download CSV or Download Excel (.xlsx). New File clears everything so you can start again. The output file keeps your original name with the new extension.
When to use it
Use it when a spreadsheet must be turned into CSV for an import tool, when a CSV exported from a database needs to become a proper Excel file with real numbers, or when a European export separated by semicolons opens as a single column. It is also useful for checking what encoding an old export used.
When not to use it
Do not use it to keep formatting. Colors, formulas, merged cells, charts and multiple sheets in one file do not survive a conversion to CSV. For very large datasets, a database or a scripting tool will be more comfortable than a browser tab. If you need to edit the data itself, open the result in a spreadsheet program.
Tips for best results
Leave the BOM box ticked if the CSV will be opened in Excel on Windows and contains accents or symbols like the rupee sign, otherwise they can look garbled. Identifiers with leading zeros, such as 00123, and digit strings over 15 characters stay as text in the Excel output, so they are not rounded or trimmed.
Limitations
Only one sheet is converted at a time. The CSV download always uses commas, even when the source used semicolons or tabs. Only the first 20 rows are previewed, though all rows are converted. Hidden sheets are skipped when visible ones exist. Excel output comes from cell text as displayed, so formulas become their shown values.
Privacy
The file you drop is read into memory by your browser and parsed there, with a spreadsheet library handling Excel formats. The CSV or Excel download is created locally as a file and handed to your browser's save function. The contents of your file are not uploaded.
