About Tip Calculator
Calculates a tip amount and the total bill based on your chosen tip percentage, and can split the total evenly across a group.
Enter the bill amount, choose or enter a tip percentage, and optionally the number of people splitting the bill. The tip amount, total, and per-person share are calculated automatically.
If the group had noticeably different orders, splitting evenly isn't always fair — this tool handles the even split well, but for itemized splitting you'd want to divide the bill by item first.

- How do I calculate a tip?
- Enter the bill and choose a tip percentage; the tool shows the tip and new total. A 20% tip on $50 is $10, for a $60 total.
- How much should I tip at a restaurant?
- In the US, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is common for sit-down service, more for excellent service. Customs vary by country.
- Does this handle splitting a bill fairly if people ordered different amounts?
- This tool handles an even split well, but if the group had noticeably different orders, splitting evenly isn't always fair — for itemized splitting, you'd want to divide the bill by item first before applying a tip.
- Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?
- Customs differ, so the tool lets you choose. For US dollars the tip starts on the pre-tax amount, the usual US custom; for other currencies it starts on bill plus tax. Use the Tip on the amount before tax switch to change either.
- How does the split work when the total doesn't divide evenly?
- Calculations are done in whole cents, pence or similar. The remainder is spread by giving some people one extra unit, and a note explains how many pay the higher and lower amounts, so shares sum to the total.
- What does rounding each share up do?
- With the switch on, each person's share is raised to the next whole unit of the chosen currency, and the extra money is added to the tip. The tip and total therefore rise slightly.
- Why is there a currency selector for a tip calculation?
- It sets the symbol, the number of decimal places and the rounding unit. For example, yen has no decimals. It also selects a local tipping hint where one is available. It does not convert amounts.
- What are the limits on the inputs?
- The bill and tax cannot be negative, the bill must be under one billion, people must be a whole number from 1 to 500, and the tip percentage cannot be negative or above 1000. A tip over 100% is allowed but shows a warning. Otherwise a red message explains what to fix.
- Is anything I enter saved?
- No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is stored or sent.
How to use Tip Calculator
Enter the Bill Amount and check the Currency, which is guessed from your browser language and can be changed from a list of 19 currencies. If your receipt shows tax separately, type it into Tax (optional). Switch on Tip on the amount before tax if you want the tip based on the pre-tax figure only; otherwise tax counts towards the base.
Choose 10, 15, 18, 20 or 25 percent with the buttons, drag the slider up to 50, or type any value from 0 to 100 into the custom box. Set Split Between to the number of people. Cards show Tip, Total and Per Person. A switch rounds each share up to a whole currency unit.
When to use it
Handy at a restaurant table when you want the total quickly, at a cafe when a few colleagues pay together, when splitting a dinner among friends and need shares that add up exactly, or when travelling and unsure of local customs. A short hint appears under the percentage for several currencies describing usual tipping practice in that country.
When not to use it
For a group where people ordered very different amounts, an even split is unfair, so work out each person's own items first and run the calculator separately. It also assumes a simple percentage. If a service charge is already printed on the bill, adding a tip on top may not be expected. Check the receipt.
Tips for best results
When the total does not divide evenly, the tool gives some people one smallest currency unit more, and the note beneath the results tells you how many pay each amount so shares add up to the exact total. Rounding up each share raises the tip slightly, which is a quick way to leave a tidy figure. Tip is computed in minor units like cents.
Limitations
Only an even split is supported, with at most 500 people and a bill under one billion. The tip must be between 0 and 100 percent. Currency is for formatting only, with no conversion. The tipping hints are general and the result is general information, not professional advice on local customs or tax treatment.
Privacy
The bill, tax, percentage and head count are held in the page and calculated in your browser. The only thing read from your device is its language setting, used to preselect a currency. No amounts are sent to a server to be worked out.
