Paraphraser / Rewriter
Rewrite text using local synonym swapping
0 words · 0 characters
Medium: phrase swaps plus a short list of safe single words, such as big to large and buy to purchase.
English only. Makes safe, hand-checked word, phrase and sentence changes — it is not an AI rewriter, so review the result. Runs in your browser: your text is never sent anywhere, though a plain usage tick (tool name and an anonymous device id) is recorded.
About Paraphraser / Rewriter
Rewrites English text with safe, hand-checked phrase and word swaps — and, on the Strong setting, simple sentence changes such as moving a "because" clause to the front — so the grammar stays intact. It is a light rewriter, not an AI one: expect careful edits, not a full rewrite.
Paste your text, pick a strength (Light, Medium or Strong) and press Paraphrase. Changed words are highlighted — click one to put the original back. Press "Rewrite again" for a different version.
Treat the output as a starting draft to edit, not a finished result — the best writing still benefits from a human pass to make sure it actually sounds like you and fits the context it's going into, rather than reading like a generic rewrite.
Watch: Paraphraser / Rewriter in Action
- Is the rewritten text ready to use as-is?
- Treat it as a starting draft to edit, not a finished result — the best writing still benefits from a human pass to make sure it actually sounds like you and fits the context it's going into.
- Is this a language model?
- No. It applies hand-written rules: phrase swaps, a short single-word list and, on Strong, a few sentence-level changes. There is no learning and no text generation, which is why the changes are modest and each one is highlighted for you to keep or undo.
- What is the difference between Light, Medium and Strong?
- Light swaps whole phrases, such as in order to becoming to. Medium adds single words, such as big becoming large or buy becoming purchase. Strong adds the rest: moving a because clause to the front, replacing But, Also and So at a sentence start, and switching between contracted and full forms.
- Why does Rewrite again sometimes give the same result?
- Only rules with more than one alternative, and the optional because reorder on Strong, vary between runs. Many phrases have a single replacement, so a text built from those reads the same each time. Try a different strength instead.
- Can I undo a single change?
- Yes. Every changed spot is shaded, and clicking it puts the original words back right there without touching the rest. Hovering shows the original text. The change count under the output goes down as you restore spots.
- Will it work on languages other than English?
- No. The rules are English phrases, and any line with no Latin letters is passed through unchanged. Text in another Latin-script language may be left alone or have an English-looking word swapped by accident, so use the tool for English only.
- Is my text sent anywhere?
- No. The rewriting runs in your browser, so the text you paste stays on your device. Only a plain usage tick (the tool name and an anonymous device id) is recorded.
- Will it keep my meaning?
- It aims to: every swap comes from a hand-checked list, not a language model. Still read the result, because a word that fits one sentence can be slightly off in another. Click any highlighted change to put the original back.
How to use Paraphraser / Rewriter
Paste English text into the box; a word and character count shows under it. Choose a Strength button, Light, Medium or Strong, with Medium selected at the start, then press Paraphrase.
The rewritten text appears below with every changed spot highlighted, and a line reports how many changes were made. Click any highlighted word or phrase to restore the original wording in that place. Press Rewrite again to try the next alternative wherever a rule has more than one, and use Copy once you are happy.
If nothing could be changed safely, a notice suggests trying Strong or a longer passage. Read the finished result aloud before you use it.
When to use it
Useful for loosening stiff wording in an email or report you wrote yourself, replacing a repeated phrase such as in order to or prior to, or making a short notice sound a little less repetitive. It suits a quick polish where you want to see every change and keep full control, since each swap is highlighted and can be undone with one click.
When not to use it
Do not use it to disguise someone else's writing or to get past a plagiarism or similarity checker; it changes only some words and phrases, and the structure stays recognisable. It is also the wrong tool for a full rewrite, a different reading level or a translation. For those, write the passage again yourself or ask a colleague to edit it.
Tips for best results
Start on Light and work upward, because each level adds to the one before and Light touches only whole phrases. Strong is the only level that changes sentence order, and its because reorder applies only to short sentences with no commas. If your text already contains contractions, Strong expands them; if it has none, Strong contracts. Scan for also changed to as well, which can sound off mid-sentence, and click it back.
Limitations
The tool works from fixed lists of about thirty phrases and a few dozen single words, so most sentences stay untouched. It handles English only, passes through lines with no Latin letters, and does not understand meaning, so a swap can fit badly in an unusual sentence. Quoted text and names are rewritten too if they contain a listed phrase. Rewrite again changes little when rules have one alternative.
Privacy
The rewriting is done by rules running inside your browser tab, so the text you paste is not uploaded and is not saved on your device. The site may record that Paraphrase was pressed, with a device identifier, to count daily use; that record does not contain your text. Rewrite again and click-to-restore also run locally, and Copy goes to your clipboard only.
