About Rotate PDF
Rotate PDF pages to any orientation
Watch: Rotate PDF in Action
- Does rotating a PDF page keep the text selectable?
- A 90-degree rotation does, since it just flips a rotation flag rather than touching the page content. A custom angle (for a slightly skewed scan, for example) redraws that specific page as vector content at its original sharpness, not as a picture, so its text stays selectable. Links and form fields on that page are not kept.
- Can I rotate just one page instead of the whole document?
- Yes — each page has its own rotate control in the preview, so you can fix individual pages (a sideways-scanned page mixed into an otherwise correct document, for example) without rotating everything.
- My double-sided scan has every other page upside down — do I have to fix each one by hand?
- No — use Rotate Odd Pages or Rotate Even Pages to fix every other page in one click, a common result of scanning a double-sided document as one long PDF where alternating sides come out flipped.
- What's the difference between this and fixing page order in Organize PDF?
- Rotate PDF only changes each page's orientation — it doesn't reorder or remove pages. Organize PDF is the tool for reordering pages or dropping ones you don't need; if a document needs both fixing (rotating a sideways page AND reordering), do either one first, then use Continue to move to the other tool with the result.
- Can I type an exact angle instead of only 90-degree steps?
- Yes — each page's rotation field accepts any angle, not just multiples of 90. Useful for a scan that's slightly crooked rather than fully sideways, where a small correction (like 3 or 5 degrees) looks better than a full quarter-turn.
- Are my files uploaded to a server?
- No — rotation, including custom-angle rendering, runs entirely in your browser, including the page previews you see before applying anything. Your PDF never leaves your device.
- Will rotating change the page size or add white borders?
- A 90-degree rotation just flips the page's own width and height, no white borders added. A custom angle does add some background around the rotated content, since redrawing a page at an angle within a rectangular page needs somewhere for the corners to go — this is a real, visible tradeoff of the custom-angle approach, not a bug.
- Can I preview the rotation before downloading?
- Yes — each page thumbnail updates immediately to show the rotation you've applied, before you click Apply rotation. Nothing is saved to a file until you download the result.
- Does rotating a page reduce quality or remove its text?
- A turn of 90, 180 or 270 degrees redraws nothing; it only changes the page's rotation setting, so text stays selectable and images keep their pixels. A custom angle redraws the page as vector content at its original resolution, still without turning it into a picture.
- What angles can I type, and which way is positive?
- Anything from -180 to 180 degrees, with positive meaning clockwise. Decimals are accepted, and the nudge buttons move by 0.1. A value outside the range is wrapped, so 270 becomes -90, which is a quarter turn to the left.
- Why did the links on a page stop working after a custom angle?
- That page is rebuilt on a new page sized to hold the turned content, and links and form fields on it are not carried across. Pages turned in exact quarter steps keep theirs, so use those if a link matters.
- Can I rotate only some pages?
- Yes. Every page has its own arrows and angle box, and the odd and even buttons act on alternate pages. Pages you leave at zero are not touched at all in the saved file.
- Is my original file changed, and can I adjust after applying?
- The original stays as it is; the tool builds a new file named after yours with -rotated added. Changing any angle after applying discards that result, so you can adjust and press Apply rotation again before downloading.
How to use Rotate PDF
Once a PDF is dropped, page previews appear, and the buttons already work while they load. For a whole document, use the two Rotate all 90 buttons at the top, one with a counter-clockwise icon and one with a clockwise icon. If only alternate pages are wrong, as happens when a duplex scan was fed in sideways, Rotate odd pages and Rotate even pages each turn those pages a quarter turn clockwise.
For one page, use the arrow icons on either side of its page label. For a slightly crooked scan, type an angle in the box under the page, from -180 to 180 with clockwise as positive, or press the minus and plus buttons to nudge it by 0.1 degrees. The tile turns as you change it. Press Apply rotation, compare the Original and Rotated views, then download the file ending in -rotated.
When to use it
A phone scan came out with a few pages sideways, a batch from a document feeder has every second page upside down, or one landscape table was inserted into a portrait report and needs turning. It also suits a page photographed a couple of degrees off, where you want the text lines to run level again without redoing the scan.
When not to use it
If you also need to reorder, delete or duplicate pages in the same pass, Organize PDF turns single pages by quarter turns while you rearrange them. Rotating does not clean up a skewed scan's image quality or make its text searchable, so run OCR PDF for that. And if a page only needs trimming rather than turning, Crop PDF is the better fit.
Tips for best results
Quarter turns are the gentle option: they change only the page's display setting, so links, form fields, bookmarks and the title all survive. Keep fractional angles for real skew, because those pages are redrawn onto a new, slightly larger page. Typing a value such as -1.3 is quicker than repeated nudges. The grey tile behind each preview makes landscape pages easy to spot. Pages left at zero are never touched.
Limitations
Pages given a custom angle lose their links and form fields and grow to hold the turned corners, so their size changes and blank wedges show at the edges. Angles are limited to between -180 and 180 degrees. A password-protected PDF cannot be opened, and the tool says it could not read the file. Apply rotation stays disabled until some page has a non-zero angle.
Privacy
The PDF is read from your device by code already loaded in the tab. Previews are drawn locally, the rotation is written into a copy held in browser memory, and the download is that copy. No part of the file is sent over the network, and the original on your disk is never modified.
