About Add Watermark
Stamps a text or image watermark across every page of a PDF, commonly used to mark a document as a draft or confidential, or to brand it with a logo before it's shared. It's a visual signal, not a security measure — the watermark makes the document's status or origin obvious to anyone looking at it, but doesn't prevent copying, editing, or redistribution the way password protection does.
Upload your PDF, choose Text or Image, then set the watermark content, opacity, size, colour, angle and position (or Tiled, to repeat it across the whole page); an image watermark also has a logo width. By default the watermark goes on every page; choose "Skip the first page" for a cover, or type a page range such as 2-5, 8. Text in the Latin alphabet is added as real, searchable text that stays sharp when printed; text in other scripts (Chinese, Arabic, Hindi...) is drawn as a picture so it displays correctly. By default the watermark sits on top of the page; choose "Behind page content" to keep body text fully dark (a full-page scan or a solid background hides a watermark placed behind it). Download the watermarked file when it looks right. To stamp several PDFs the same way, switch to Several files: up to 5 at a time on the trial, counted as one use, with the results as a ZIP.
If the goal is actually restricting access rather than labeling a document's status, pair this with PDF Password, or use that instead — a watermark alone doesn't stop anyone from copying or editing the underlying content.
Watch: Add Watermark in Action
- Can I leave the first page clean, or watermark only some pages?
- Yes. Tick Skip the first page to leave a cover untouched, or type pages such as 2-5, 8 in the Pages box. Leave the box empty to stamp every page. If you use both, the first page is dropped after the range is read, so 1-4 with Skip the first page gives pages 2 to 4.
- Is the watermark text real text or a picture?
- Text in the Latin alphabet is added as real, searchable text, so it stays sharp when printed at any size. Text in other scripts, such as Chinese, Arabic or Hindi, is drawn as a picture so it displays correctly, and the tool tells you when that applies.
- Can I control where the watermark is placed or how transparent it is?
- Yes — choose from five position presets (center or any corner) or Tiled to repeat the watermark across the whole page, and adjust opacity with a slider from barely visible to fully solid.
- Does the watermark actually prevent someone from copying or editing the document?
- No — a watermark is a visual signal (marking a document as draft, confidential, or branded with a logo), not a security measure. If the goal is actually restricting access, pair this with PDF Password, or use that instead.
- Can I use my own logo as the watermark instead of text?
- Yes — switch to Image / Logo mode and upload a PNG or JPEG. It's scaled proportionally to the page width and placed using the same position and opacity controls as text.
- What's Tiled position for?
- It repeats the watermark across the entire page in a grid pattern instead of placing it once — useful for a document likely to be cropped, screenshotted, or partially photographed, where a single corner or center watermark could be cut out of the visible portion entirely.
- Will the watermark cover up important content on the page?
- It can, depending on opacity and position — a low opacity (10-20%) keeps the underlying content fully readable while still visibly marking the page. A high opacity centered watermark is more likely to obscure text underneath it, which may be exactly the intent for a heavily restricted draft.
- Are my files or logo image uploaded to a server?
- No — watermarking, including embedding an image watermark, runs entirely in your browser. Neither your PDF nor your logo image ever leaves your device.
- Can I remove a watermark I added by mistake?
- Not with this tool — once a watermark is drawn onto the page content and saved, it's part of the document like any other page content. Keep your original, un-watermarked file if you might need it again.
- What image formats are supported for the logo?
- PNG and JPEG. If your logo is in another format (like WEBP or SVG), convert it to PNG first using an image converter, then upload the PNG here.
- Which image formats work for the logo?
- PNG and JPEG are used directly. Other formats your browser can decode, such as WebP, GIF, BMP or SVG, are converted to PNG first. TIFF is refused with a message asking you to convert it. A JPEG that carries a rotation tag is straightened before use.
- Can I watermark in a language other than English?
- Yes. Latin text is drawn as real bold Helvetica text. Hindi, Marathi and Nepali are embedded as real text with a font from this site, and other scripts, such as Chinese or Arabic, are drawn by your browser and placed as a picture.
- What does Tiled do?
- It repeats the text or logo across each page in a grid, so a crop or partial photo still shows part of the mark. Text repeats with a gap based on its size, and logos are laid out in rows that are offset from one another.
- Does a watermark stop people copying the text?
- No. The page text stays selectable and the file stays editable; the stamp only labels it. To require a password before the file opens, use PDF Password.
- Why did my long text come out smaller than the size I chose?
- For single positions, the tool measures the turned text and reduces its size if it would not fit inside the smallest page in the document, leaving about 40 points of room at each edge. The Size label says long text shrinks to fit.
How to use Add Watermark
Begin by choosing Text or Image / Logo. For text, type the wording in Watermark Text (CONFIDENTIAL is pre-filled), set Size from 12 to 160 points and pick a Colour; light grey is the default. For an image, choose a file and set Logo width from 5 to 80 percent of the page.
Next choose a Position: Center, Top Left, Top Right, Bottom Left, Bottom Right or Tiled. Set Angle from 0 to 90 degrees and Opacity from 5 to 100 percent. Clicking a position resets the angle to 45 for Center and Tiled and to 0 for the corners. Press Add Watermark, check the preview, and download the file ending in -watermarked.
When to use it
Marking a contract DRAFT before it circulates, stamping CONFIDENTIAL on a board pack, putting a company logo in the corner of a proposal, or laying a repeating label over a document likely to be photographed or cropped, where a tiled pattern is much harder to cut out of the picture.
When not to use it
A watermark is a visible label, not protection: the underlying text can still be selected and the file can still be edited. To require a password, use PDF Password; to remove sensitive words for good, use Redact PDF. This tool also stamps every page, so it cannot mark only a chosen section of the document.
Tips for best results
Light grey at about 30 percent opacity reads clearly without hiding the text beneath it. Long wording is shrunk automatically so the turned text fits inside the smallest page, except in Tiled mode, which repeats at your chosen size. For logos, a transparent PNG gives the cleanest edge, and a narrow width with Tiled makes a quiet pattern. Preview before downloading, since the stamp sits over the page content.
Limitations
Every page gets the stamp, with no page-range option, and it is drawn on top of the content rather than behind it. Angle runs only from 0 to 90, so a diagonal sloping the other way is not available. TIFF images are refused, and text in scripts the built-in font lacks, such as Chinese or Arabic, is drawn as a picture instead of selectable text. Several files at once: the Several files switch stamps up to 5 PDFs on the trial (more on a paid plan) with the same settings and counts as one use, and a file that cannot be read fails alone while the rest finish.
Privacy
Your PDF and any logo are read locally and combined in memory, so the stamped copy is made on your own device and nothing is uploaded. The one outside request this tool can cause is a small font file from this same site, fetched only when your text contains Hindi, Marathi or Nepali characters, so they can be stored as real text. Your choices (text or logo type, wording, position, size, angle, colour and opacity) are remembered while this browser tab stays open and are cleared when you close it. The logo image itself is not kept.
