About PDF Editor
Adds text, freehand drawing, shapes (rectangle and ellipse outlines), and highlight boxes directly onto a PDF's pages, without needing desktop software like Acrobat — for filling in a blank, labeling something, sketching an arrow or circle to point something out, or drawing attention to a section. Honestly: this is annotation, not true document editing — it adds new content on top of the page. Edit text mode can replace a single line by covering it with a white patch, but it can't reflow paragraphs or change the PDF's own text layer; for full rewrites, PDF to Word converts to an editable document instead.
For filling out a form with defined fields, check whether the PDF already has real fillable form fields first — those give cleaner, better-aligned results than manually placing text boxes.
Watch: PDF Editor in Action
- Can I add my own text, shapes, and annotations to any PDF?
- Yes — add text, freehand drawing, rectangle and ellipse shapes, and highlights directly onto the real page, with a live preview showing exactly where each addition will land before you download.
- Can this rewrite or edit the PDF's existing text?
- No — this adds new content on top of the page (annotations), it doesn't rewrite or reflow the document's own existing body text. If you need to actually edit the underlying text content, PDF to Word converts the PDF into an editable Word document instead.
- What's the difference between this and Sign PDF?
- This is for general annotation — text, shapes, highlights, freehand marks anywhere on the page. Sign PDF is specifically built around placing a signature (drawn, typed, or imported). If you're adding a signature specifically, Sign PDF's dedicated signature tools are more direct than drawing one freehand here.
- What's the difference between this and Redact PDF?
- This adds visible content on top of a page — it doesn't remove anything underneath. Redact genuinely deletes content from the document. A highlight or box drawn here doesn't hide or remove whatever's beneath it in the underlying file the way a real redaction does.
- Can I undo a mistake before downloading?
- Yes — every annotation has its own remove (X) button, and Clear All removes everything at once. Nothing is permanent until you click Apply & Download.
- Are my files uploaded to a server?
- No — everything, including rendering the page previews you see, happens entirely in your browser. Your PDF never leaves your device.
- Can I fill in an existing fillable form with this?
- You can, by placing text boxes over the form's fields, but if the PDF already has real fillable form fields, using those directly (rather than manually placed text) gives cleaner, better-aligned results — check for real form fields first before resorting to manual placement.
- Can I change the color or size of shapes and text?
- Not currently — text, shapes, and freehand strokes use fixed default styling. If you need specific colors or sizes for a particular use case, that level of customization isn't available here yet.
- Can I change text that is already on the page?
- Yes, with Edit text. Click a line, change or clear it, and the new words are drawn in a standard font over a white patch that covers the old line. The old words remain in the file underneath. It will not work on scanned pages.
- What happens to my original file?
- It is left alone. The tool reads it, draws your additions into a copy and gives you that copy as a download named edited_ followed by the original filename. You can edit again by reopening the original.
- Can I work across several pages in one go?
- Yes. Items are remembered per page as you move with the arrows, and a counter shows how many have been added in total. Pressing 'Apply & Download' writes all of them into the file together.
- Can I resize or rotate an item after placing it?
- No resizing or rotating is offered. Select lets you drag an item to a new position, change its colour, text size, bold, line width or tint, or remove it. To change a shape's size, delete it and draw it again.
- Does it work on a phone or tablet?
- The drawing and moving modes respond to touch, with page scrolling suppressed during a drag. The page preview is a fixed-width picture, so a larger screen makes precise placing, small shapes and long edits noticeably easier.
How to use PDF Editor
Drop a PDF and move between pages with the arrows in the toolbar. Pick a mode. Select moves or restyles an item you click, Edit text lets you click a line of the page's own text and rewrite or clear it, Text places a new text box where you click, Highlight, Rectangle and Ellipse work by dragging across an area, and the pencil mode sketches a line as you drag. The style bar offers eight colours, text sizes from 8 to 48 pt with a bold toggle, line widths from 1 to 8 pt and a 'Tint inside' option for shapes.
Undo and Redo (Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y) step through your changes, and Delete removes the selected item. When you finish, press 'Apply & Download'; the file is saved with edited_ in front of the original name.
When to use it
Use it to fix a typo in a printed line, add a date or name to a document that has no form fields, circle or cross out something for a reviewer, mark up a drawing with arrows and shapes, or highlight clauses before sending a contract back. Working page by page with undo makes it easy to experiment before committing anything.
When not to use it
Do not use it to hide confidential text. An edited line is covered by a white patch while the original words stay in the file and can still be found by searching, so use a redaction tool for anything sensitive. It does not reflow paragraphs, change pictures or edit scanned pages that are only images. For a PDF with real form fields, Fillable Forms gives cleaner results.
Tips for best results
Edit text works on one line at a time: click it, retype it and keep the replacement close to the original length so it does not run into its neighbours. Replacement text is drawn in a standard sans-serif font rather than the original typeface, so expect a slight difference. Set colour and size before placing an item, or select an item afterwards to restyle it. Highlights are partly transparent so the words beneath stay readable.
Limitations
Everything you add is drawn on top of the page as new content; the underlying page content is not rewritten. Text is set in Helvetica, so Latin characters are real text while characters outside that set are drawn as pictures. Edit text works only where a page has selectable text, and each click covers one line. Items cannot be resized after placing, only moved, restyled or deleted.
Privacy
Page previews, text detection and the edited file are all produced in your browser, and the PDF is not uploaded. The viewer component is bundled with this site instead of being loaded from a third-party address. Your original file is only read; the edited copy is a separate download. Because the white patch hides text rather than removing it, treat sensitive documents with care.
