About Home Inventory Tracker
Tracks household items by category and location, with a low-stock threshold that flags anything running low the next time you check.
Add items with a category, location, current quantity, and a low-stock threshold, and anything at or below that threshold is flagged automatically.
Set low-stock thresholds based on how often you actually shop, not an arbitrary round number — if you shop weekly, a threshold that gives you at least a week's buffer avoids running out between trips.
Watch: Home Inventory Tracker in Action
- How should I set my low-stock threshold?
- Base it on how often you actually shop, not an arbitrary round number — if you shop weekly, a threshold that gives you at least a week's buffer avoids running out between trips.
- When does an item show as low stock?
- When the number in Qty is less than or equal to the number in Low Stock At. With a threshold of 2, an item with exactly 2 left is flagged, and so is one with 1 or 0. Empty or non-numeric boxes are treated as 0.
- Will my list still be here tomorrow?
- Only while the tab is open. Edits are kept for the visit and erased when you close the tab; nothing is synced or stored online. Use Back up to save a file and Restore to continue later or on another device.
- How do I get the list into Excel or Google Sheets?
- Press Copy as CSV, then paste into a blank cell. The columns arrive as Item, Category, Location, Quantity and Low Stock At. Text that begins with =, + or @ gets a leading apostrophe so a spreadsheet will not run it as a formula.
- Can I import a spreadsheet I already have?
- Not directly. Restore accepts only the JSON backup this tool wrote itself. For an existing sheet, press Add Item for each row and type or paste the values into each box, one field at a time.
- Can I keep track of several rooms or shelves?
- Lightly, yes. Use the Location box for the room or shelf and Category for the kind of item. There is only one list and no tabs or filters, so you find things by scanning the Location column rather than switching views.
How to use Home Inventory Tracker
The tool opens with three sample rows (paper towels, AA batteries, canned tomatoes) so you can see the layout; overwrite or delete them. Press Add Item to create a row named New Item with a Qty of 1 and a Low Stock At value of 1, then type over each box: Item, Category, Location, Qty and Low Stock At. Category and Location are plain text, so use whatever labels match your home or stockroom.
A row is flagged when its Qty is equal to or below its Low Stock At number. Flagged names are gathered in an amber Low Stock panel at the top, and the item's name box gets an amber border. The trash button removes a row. Copy as CSV puts Item, Category, Location, Quantity and Low Stock At on your clipboard, ready to paste into a spreadsheet.
When to use it
Reach for it when you want a quick count of what is in the pantry, garage, craft room or a small shop storeroom, plus a visible warning before you run out. It suits batteries, cleaning supplies, tinned food, printer cartridges, spare parts and anything else bought in units. Because every row has a location, it also helps when several people share a space and keep asking where the last box went.
When not to use it
Skip it if you need barcode scanning, purchase history, expiry dates, costs, or several people editing one list at the same moment. It has none of those and keeps the list in a single browser. A shared spreadsheet or a dedicated stock system suits a business that deals with suppliers and reorders much better than this simple household list.
Tips for best results
Set Low Stock At to the amount you use between shopping trips rather than zero, since an item sitting exactly at its threshold is already flagged. Spell Category the same way on similar rows so the pasted CSV sorts cleanly later. A blank or non-numeric Qty counts as 0, so an empty box will show as low. Use Back up before you close the tab, and Restore to continue later or on another device.
Limitations
There is no sorting, search, filter or unit column, so a long list is scrolled rather than queried. Rows are not grouped by category on screen, and Category and Location are only labels you type. Copy as CSV is the only export, and it goes to the clipboard rather than to a file. Restore reads only the JSON file produced by this tool's own Back up button, not CSV or Excel.
Privacy
Your item list never leaves the page, and nothing is sent to a server. The tool keeps it for this visit only, so it is erased when you close the tab or press Clear. Back up writes a JSON file into your own downloads folder.
