About Thumbnail Generator
Generates a thumbnail image from a specific frame of a video, useful for creating a preview image without needing to take a separate screenshot or open a video editor — a common need for uploading a video somewhere that requires its own thumbnail, or for a preview image on a page linking to the video.
Upload your video, find the frame you want (step buttons, a time box, or the Suggest frames strip), choose a size such as 1280 x 720 for YouTube, add a title if you like, and capture. Download one image or all of them as a ZIP.
Pick a frame with a clear, in-focus subject and good lighting — a thumbnail pulled from a blurry transition or motion-heavy moment rarely looks good on its own, even if that exact moment matters in the video itself. Scrubbing slowly near a scene change usually finds a sharper frame than scrubbing quickly and guessing.

- How do I get a sharp, non-blurry thumbnail?
- Pick a frame with a clear, in-focus subject and good lighting — a thumbnail pulled from a blurry transition or motion-heavy moment rarely looks good on its own. Scrubbing slowly near a scene change usually finds a sharper frame than scrubbing quickly and guessing.
- What image formats and sizes can I export?
- PNG by default, or JPG at 92 percent quality if you tick Save as JPG. Sizes are the video's own size, 1280 x 720, 1080 x 1920 or 1080 x 1080. Files are named after the video, the time of the frame and, where used, the size and title tags.
- Can I save more than one frame from the same video?
- Yes. Each press of Capture Thumbnail adds another image to the gallery below. Download them one at a time, or once you have more than one, press Download all as ZIP to receive a single archive with every capture.
- What does Suggest frames actually do?
- It jumps to ten evenly spaced moments, makes a small preview of each, and scores them for sharpness. Frames that are almost black or nearly white are skipped and shown faded. The sharpest remaining one gets a ring and a star. Click any preview to jump there.
- My iPhone video will not show in the player. What now?
- Some browsers cannot play iPhone HEVC video. The tool says so, hides the player, and asks you to type the time of the frame. Pressing Capture Thumbnail then takes a little longer because a processing engine is downloaded and used to read that frame.
- What is the difference between Fill and Fit?
- Both apply when you choose a fixed size. Fill scales the frame until it covers the whole picture and crops whatever overflows. Fit scales the frame to sit inside the picture and adds black bars where it does not reach, so nothing is cut off.
How to use Thumbnail Generator
Drop a video file onto the page. Move through it with the player, or use the -1 s, -1 frame, +1 frame and +1 s buttons, or type a moment such as 1:05.5 or 65.5 in the Time box and press Enter. Suggest frames lays out ten small previews across the video and marks the sharpest well-lit one.
Choose a Size: Original size, YouTube 1280 x 720, Shorts / Reels 1080 x 1920 or Square 1080 x 1080. For the fixed sizes, Shape decides between Fill (crop the edges) and Fit (black bars). Add a Title if you want text, then pick its Font, Colour and size slider. Press Capture Thumbnail as often as you like, then download each image or use Download all as ZIP.
When to use it
Use it when a platform asks for its own cover image and you only have the video: a 1280 x 720 picture for an upload page, a tall cover cut from a landscape clip for Shorts or Reels, a poster image for a lesson page, or several candidate frames to compare before choosing. The optional title helps a plain frame read as a cover.
When not to use it
It places one block of text near the bottom of a single frame, so it is not a design tool. For layered thumbnails with cut-out people, arrows, shapes or several text boxes, use an image editor. If you only need the existing cover of a video that is already on YouTube, the YouTube thumbnail tool fetches it directly.
Tips for best results
Pause on the frame before pressing Capture Thumbnail, because it takes exactly what is showing. Fill avoids black bars but trims the edges, so keep faces and key objects near the centre of a tall or square crop. The title sits in the lower part of the image, so avoid choosing a frame whose important detail is down there. Black text gets a white outline automatically; the other colours get a black one.
Limitations
There are four output sizes, one title block, four fonts and four text colours, and no control over where the text sits. Long titles wrap onto extra lines within about 90 percent of the width. Suggest frames samples ten evenly spaced moments, so a brief ideal frame can fall between them. If the browser cannot play your video, as with some iPhone HEVC clips, you must type the time, and Suggest frames is hidden.
Privacy
Your video is played from a temporary address inside your own browser, and each frame is drawn onto a canvas there. Nothing is uploaded. The one outside download happens only for videos your browser cannot play: the tool then fetches its video-processing engine from a public CDN and reads the frame locally, while the video itself still never leaves your device.
