About Redact PowerPoint
Blacks out sensitive text in a PowerPoint presentation (.pptx). Choose what to look for (emails, phone numbers, card numbers, your own words, or a pattern), and every match on every slide, in the speaker notes, in charts and SmartArt, in comments and in alt text is replaced by solid blocks in the file itself, not just covered by a shape. Pictures can be replaced by a black stand-in, and the author details, notes and comments can be stripped. The result is checked by reading the new file again for anything that still matches.
Text inside a picture (a screenshot, a scanned page) cannot be found, so use the picture options for slides that carry those, and always look through the preview before sending. Video and audio are not changed. A name can appear in a file's title or in an embedded spreadsheet; the report lists what the tool saw and what it could not check. Keep your original: a redacted slide cannot be restored.
- Is the text really removed, or just covered?
- Really removed. Each match is replaced by solid block characters in the file's own text, so nothing is hidden underneath. Pictures you choose are replaced by a black picture of the same size. The result is read again to check nothing matching is left.
- What does it not catch?
- Text that is part of a picture, such as a screenshot or a scan, cannot be found, so use the picture options on those slides. Video and audio are not changed. Names that appear only in a file's title or in an embedded object may need a manual look. The result lists what it could not check.
- What can I search for?
- Emails, phone numbers, US Social Security numbers, card numbers, web addresses, IP addresses, money amounts and dates, plus your own words and your own patterns (regular expressions). It looks on slides, speaker notes, the master and layouts, charts, SmartArt, comments and alt text.
- Can I get the text back?
- No. Keep your original. A redacted slide cannot be restored.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. The deck is read and rewritten in your browser tab. A request that counts the use goes to this site when you download and carries no part of your file.
How to use Redact PowerPoint
Drop your .pptx, tick the kinds of text to remove, and add your own words or patterns. Choose what to do about pictures, speaker notes and file details. The preview shows your original beside the redacted deck, with the count on each slide; download when it looks right.
When to use it
Useful before a deck goes to a client, a court, a journalist or a wider mailing list, when it holds names, contact details, card or account numbers, or figures that must not travel.
When not to use it
If text is inside a picture, a scan or a screenshot, the tool cannot see it: black out those pictures, or redact in the source. For a PDF, use Redact PDF.
Tips for best results
Look through the preview before you send. Keep your original, because a redacted slide cannot be restored. Remove the speaker notes and author details too unless you need them.
Limitations
Matches are replaced by block characters of the same length. Text in pictures, video and audio is not searched. Names in a file's title or in an embedded object may need a manual check. The tool reads the result again and reports anything that still matches. The result has not been checked in desktop PowerPoint.
Privacy
The deck is read and rewritten inside your browser tab and is not uploaded. A request that counts the use goes to this site when you download and carries no part of your file.
