About Income Tax Calculator
Estimates your US federal income tax, payroll (FICA) or self-employment tax, state income tax and California State Disability Insurance (SDI) for 2026, using the official brackets and standard deduction for your filing status. A Custom Flat Rate mode is also available for a quick estimate with any tax rate and currency outside the US.
Enter your income and filing status, choose employee or self-employed, and pick your state (or type your own state rate). Add pre-tax contributions such as a traditional 401(k) to see how they lower your tax. Choose how to see the result: per year, month or paycheck (semi-monthly, biweekly, weekly). Switch to Custom Flat Rate to enter a percentage directly — the UK Tax Calculator and India Income Tax Calculator handle those systems properly.
This uses the standard deduction and ignores credits (such as the child tax credit) — if you itemize or have credits, your actual liability could differ meaningfully.

- Is this an exact calculation of what I'll owe?
- It's a solid estimate based on standard rates and brackets, but doesn't account for every deduction, credit, or unusual circumstance that could apply to your specific situation. Use it for planning, not as a substitute for filing your actual return.
- How much tax will I pay in 2026?
- Enter income, filing status and state. The calculator applies 2026 federal brackets and the standard deduction, adds Social Security and Medicare (FICA) and state tax, and shows total tax, take-home income and effective rate.
- What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
- The marginal rate is the bracket your last dollar falls in. The effective rate is total tax divided by income, always lower because lower brackets are taxed at lower rates.
- Does it include state income tax?
- Yes. Pick your state and its tax is added; states with no income tax are marked as such and show zero for that line. For California it also adds State Disability Insurance on its own line.
- Does it include California SDI?
- Yes. For California employees it deducts State Disability Insurance at 1.3% of all 2026 wages, with no wage cap, as its own line, so take-home pay matches a pay stub more closely. It is taken from gross wages, so a 401(k) contribution does not lower it, and it is not applied when you tick self-employed. Other states' disability and paid-leave contributions (for example New York, New Jersey and Washington) are not included, and the page says so.
- Which year's state tax rates does it use?
- Mostly 2026. California uses the 2025 Franchise Tax Board schedule because the 2026 one is not published yet, and Vermont and North Dakota use 2025 bracket widths. The note under your result names the tax year and the source for the state you picked.
- Can I see take-home pay per paycheck instead of per year?
- Yes. Use Show amounts per to switch every figure to a month, or to a semi-monthly, biweekly or weekly paycheck. Each is the yearly amount divided by 12, 24, 26 or 52. A real paycheck also depends on your W-4 and employer deductions.
- Can I use it if I am self-employed?
- Yes. Tick the self-employed box and it calculates self-employment tax instead of employee FICA (and no California SDI, which only applies to employee wages).
- Does filing status change the result?
- Yes. Single, married filing jointly, married filing separately and head of household each have their own brackets and standard deduction.
- Is my income data saved or uploaded?
- No. Every number stays in your browser and is never sent to a server.
