Use Etsy Title and Tag Checker to verify character limits, tag counts, repeats, and title words missing from tags.
Avery Kim is refreshing spring listings for a Charleston ceramics shop. Etsy’s limits are strict: title length, thirteen tags, per-tag length—and repeated tags waste slots. Etsy Title and Tag Checker checks a title against the 140-character limit and tags against the 13-tag, 20-character limits, with repeat and coverage checks—in the browser, no upload of listing text.
This guide covers one job only: make the listing limit-clean before publish, without pretending the tool ranks keywords.
Does: character and count limits, repeated tags (even with different capitalization), title words not used in any tag, symbols Etsy usually rejects in tags.
Does not: tell you which words will rank or what buyers search. It has no search data. Word choice stays yours.
Fees and margins after the listing is clean: Marketplace Fee Calculator, Profit Margin Calculator, Shipping Cost Estimator. Category: business tools.
When the tool lists title words missing from tags, that is a gap report, not a mandate to force every word into a tag. Prioritize buyer language. Do not invent thirteen near-identical variants that waste the 13-tag budget.
Avery keeps a spreadsheet: listing ID, title, 13 tags, last check date. When spring colors change, she re-runs the checker instead of guessing lengths in the phone app.
On batch day, check every title/tag set before bulk scheduling photos. Limit failures at 10 p.m. are worse than catching them at noon.
Editing titles on the phone often truncates what you think you saved. After any mobile edit, paste back into the checker. Avery lost a full day of ads once because a title silently exceeded length after an app “suggestion.”
Use your own sales history, Etsy search suggestions, and competitor titles for word choice. Run those candidates through the checker so they fit limits. The two steps stay separate on purpose.
If you clone a listing for a new colorway, re-check tags. Copied sets often keep color names that no longer match, wasting tags and confusing buyers.
Some characters and emoji count differently than you expect. If the checker and the Etsy form disagree by one or two characters, shorten the title until both are happy. Never ship at the exact maximum if the form still warns.
When a listing converts well, archive its exact title and tag set. Future seasonal variants start from a limit-clean winner instead of a blank box.
Does it rank keywords? No search data—limits and hygiene only.
How to separate tags? Commas, semicolons, or one per line.
Is listing text uploaded? No—browser tab only.
The checker sorts every finding into an error, a piece of advice, or an all-clear, and only two things are treated as firm errors: a title over 140 characters, and more than 13 tags or any tag longer than 20 characters. Duplicate tags count as errors too, and the comparison ignores capitals, so "Coffee Mug" and "coffee mug" collide. Everything else is advice, because the tool cannot know how Etsy ranks listings.
Here is a case that trips people. A tag written as "personalized ceramic mug" looks reasonable, but it runs 24 characters, so the tool reports it as 4 over the 20 limit. Trim it to "custom ceramic mug" at 18 and the error clears. A tag such as "mug & cup" passes the length test but draws a note about the ampersand, since Etsy usually rejects symbols in tags. Confirm that one in the listing editor before relying on it.
The tool also shows the first 40 characters of your title as a separate unit, because many list views cut the text there. If your best phrase sits after character 40, move it forward. Once the title is clean, the fee and margin tools listed above help you test whether the price still works for a seller keeping the tags and title you settled on.
Limits first, creativity second. Open Etsy Title and Tag Checker, clean the title and thirteen tags, then publish.
