Formal Paperwork for a Private Sale or Loan

The real documents worth having in writing for a private transaction between individuals.

A bill of sale documents the transaction itself and comes first since it's the foundation everything else builds from. A promissory note is specifically for when payment happens over time rather than all at once -- it's what makes an informal payment plan between friends or family into something actually enforceable in writing. A power of attorney is the most situational of the three, only needed if someone else has to act on your behalf for part of the transaction, which is why it's presented last as conditional rather than universal.
